The trucking industry and the race to turn a student truck driver into a professional driver is on! Born from the trucking compliance industry, iMVR has emerged as the leader in VR training for the trucking industry. With IRIS both student and professional drivers can learn through repetition how to couple and uncouple.
The IRIS Coupling / Uncoupling Module
IRIS creates an immersive experience where student truck drivers can learn how to operate a truck from within the cab or inspect and prepare for trips from outside the cab. With simulators you can only experience what is it like to drive a truck. While helpful, they are costly and only provide a portion of the necessary training for future and existing truck drivers.
The IRIS platform is cost effective and the most effective teaching tool yet for the trucking industry to train it’s drivers. To what degree of confidence do you have with your drivers following your company’s best practices? Have you ever had a driver not secure the kingpin properly or pull forward without raising the landing gear properly.
These are just a few of the tasks drivers can complete during the coupling / uncoupling process (in no particular order).
Drivers can also virtually:
- inspect the 5th wheel
- are the wheel chocks in place? (90% of the industry don’t do this. It is best practice for some companies and is taught by reputable schools)
- back slowly (honk the horn prior to backing up)(could include 4 ways as a best practice)
- secure the tractor (lock into the kingpin) –
- adjust the landing gear (trailer should be slightly lower than the fifth wheel)
- connect (outside the tractor)and activate the airlines (inside the tractor)
- apply trailer brakes and prepare to successfully back under the trailer
- slowly pull forward to ensure you are attached
- and much more
This module, as in other IRIS modules, companies can include their own “best practice” approach to the tasks and the order in which the tasks are completed. We just facilitate the repetitive approach to building muscle memory so that your drivers can learn to perform required tasks proficiently and consistently. On their own a professional driver can then go back and review their session as often as needed so that when they get back in the module, they can show marked improvement.
An Immersive Experience!
According to Wikipedia, Immersion into virtual reality is a perception of being physically present in a non-physical world. The perception is created by surrounding the user of the VR system in images, sound or other stimuli that provide an engrossing total environment.
Using the controller a driver can teleport into or out of the truck cab. To a casual observer watching the session, they see the student physically moving in a manner consistent with looking at an actual truck and trailer.
This feature is so important to the training and review process. The Student Truck Driver is sitting in the cab and can’t understand why the truck won’t pull forward. They can get out of the cab and look around and possibly find the wheel chocks they forgot to remove. This gives the training a real experiential feel to the session. The driver feels immersed in the process and can behave in a manner consistent to actually being in a truck!
Also according to Wikipedia, Muscle memory is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition, which has been used synonymously with motor learning.
When we do something so often, we remember it so well we can do it without thinking about it. IRIS allows you to have cost effective repetitions in a training environment. It’s much less expensive using IRIS than it is using an actual truck!
Students, professional drivers, and instructors alike can get go back and review all sessions. This is an amazing opportunity for the instructor to reinforce areas that need improving.
This combination reinforces good behavior in both student truck drivers and professional drivers alike.
Birds Eye View
The “Birds Eye View” in the coupling / uncoupling module gives instructors and students alike the ability to change the view from the drivers view inside the truck to a view looking at the session from outside the truck. This feature is truly unique in the industry.
You can stop and toggle to the birds eye view. You can now look at the session from any angle around the truck. You can rotate in 3D completely around, above, and underneath the truck. You can discuss and view any issue that the professional truck driver encountered at any point within their session. It is an amazing learning opportunity.
Real Instructors and Real Students!
I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for us to be able to teach these highly repetitive tasks. It is some of the simple things that are often overlooked in training and the drivers learn lazy or bad habits. Not with the IRIS coupling / uncoupling module.
I kept forgetting to inspect the area in chock wheels. It was just one of those things that was hard for me to remember. Not anymore! My instructors were patient and after many repetitions I finally had it burned into my memory!
People & Technology You Can Trust!
iMVR was started by people who came from compliance within the trucking industry. We know trucking and have collaborated with some of the industry’s best recognized truck driver training schools to create the most comprehensive virtual reality training platform for the trucking industry.
The IRIS platform creates a safe environment to develop memory retention and learn new professional truck driver skills. iMVR customers consistently see increased driver retention rates with use of the IRIS platform and suite of training modules.
